Connect to Home Network Local Devices and Internet Service from personal devices while travelling

Option 1: Using OpenVPN on Your Phone, Tablet, or Laptop

If you’d like to connect a single device — like your iPhone, iPad, or laptop — to your home network while traveling, we can use the OpenVPN Connect app. Here’s how it works:

We configure an OpenVPN server on either a Peplink router at home or on a FusionHub instance in the cloud.

You install the OpenVPN app on your device and import the configuration we provide.

Once connected, your device can securely access your home network and/or route all internet traffic through your home connection for privacy and local access.

Notes

Important Note:

If your home setup only includes a SpeedFusion Relay device (rather than a full Peplink router), then you can’t run the VPN server directly at home. Instead, we’ll deploy a FusionHub virtual appliance in the cloud. Your device will connect to FusionHub via OpenVPN, and FusionHub will relay the traffic securely to your home via SpeedFusion Relay.

Option 2: Travel Router with SpeedFusion Relay Tunnel

If you’re traveling with multiple devices and want a full Wi-Fi network wherever you go, we can set up a small Peplink travel router that creates a secure tunnel back to your home.

The travel router connects to the internet using Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or cellular.

It then creates a SpeedFusion VPN tunnel back to your home.

All connected devices route through the tunnel as if they were on your home network.

Now here’s where the home setup matters:

If your home network only has a SpeedFusion Relay device, the travel router will still need to connect to FusionHub first, and then traffic is passed from FusionHub to your home via the relay.
If you have a full Peplink router at home — and it has either a public/static IP or a dynamic IP with DDNS — then FusionHub is optional. The travel router can connect directly to your home Peplink router using SpeedFusion VPN, eliminating the need for a cloud relay.
Info
Note: Using FusionHub in the cloud has a monthly ongoing cost, whereas the full Peplink Balance/MAX router at home has a higher upfront hardware cost

Summary of How the Home Setup Affects the Options:

Home Setup

OpenVPN (iOS/Laptop)

Travel Router + SpeedFusion VPN

SpeedFusion Relay Device
OpenVPN Connect App On Mobile Device
Requires FusionHub in Cloud for VPN
and SpeedFusion Relay to Home
Portable Peplink Router with WiFi/Cell/Ethernet Internet acting as WiFi AP (Portable Hotspot) for devices
Requires FusionHub in Cloud for VPN
and SpeedFusion Relay to Home
Peplink Balance or Max with PublicIP or DDNS
OpenVPN Connect App on Mobile Device
Connect Directly to Home Router via OpenVPN
Portable Peplink Router with WiFi/Cell/Ethernet Internet acting as WiFi AP (Portable Hotspot) for devices
SpeedFusion VPN Directly to Router (Public IP)
FusionHub in Cloud is Optional

If you’re looking for the simplest mobile access, the OpenVPN option is great — but it depends on where the VPN server lives.
If you want a more robust and flexible Wi-Fi network on the go, the travel router setup with SpeedFusion gives you secure connectivity for all your devices, even bonding multiple internet sources.
